Shelby Gordon, LCSW
I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, but I often think of myself as a fellow traveler with my clients. As humans, we are all going through life together. I think of it as an honor to travel alongside my clients, providing a listening ear and a space to learn more about who they are and who they want to be. My clients experience me as caring and a good listener, and I strive to create a safe and therapeutic environment where they feel comfortable being themselves. I want to give my clients room to find their own way while also being willing to offer a different perspective or gently challenge them when I think it could be helpful.
My Background…
I grew up in Washington State. After high school, I moved to Chicago and received my undergraduate degree in Intercultural Studies. I then continued on to earn my Master of Social Work degree from California Baptist University. As a therapist, I have worked with children, adolescents, and adults navigating anxiety, depression, life transitions, relationship changes, grief, trauma, ADHD, and other mental health concerns. These experiences have deepened my commitment to supporting people through the experiences and transitions that shape their lives. I especially enjoy working with people as they navigate new seasons of life, work through relationship challenges, and make sense of difficult or painful experiences.
How I help…
Every person is different, so I like to start by getting to know what you are looking for in a therapist and what you are hoping to get out of therapy. From there, I find it helpful to collaboratively develop a plan for treatment tailored to your goals and needs. I utilize skills from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), as well as elements of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
Sometimes therapy means building practical skills; other times it means making space to understand where a struggle comes from. My hope is that, through our work together, you have the opportunity to explore fears or patterns that may be holding you back and reconnect with your strengths and values. Ultimately, I want you to move toward the life you want with greater confidence in your ability to navigate whatever comes next.
On a more personal note…
When I am not working, I enjoy walking along the lake, swimming, rock climbing, attempting to play the violin, caring for my plants, and spending time with friends and family. I also enjoy exploring Chicago.
