I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) and Certified Alcohol and Other Drug Counselor (CAODC). I am often thought of as supportive and encouraging. My clients experience me as non-judgemental. I try my best to honor my clients as well as their purpose no matter what their life circumstances. I pride myself in being an optimist, finding the levity in situations, and being solution focused.
How I Help…
When working with parents who are struggling with their children, I find that reflecting on your own childhood and patterns experienced with your own parents and caregivers to be effective therapy modality. Some parents want to do things very differently than how they were raised while others want to raise their own children very similarly. We will work together to explore these patterns and create strategies for successful parenting. I also help parents explore the emotions they are feeling or will feel when their children leave the home and go out into the “real world.” Working with people whose children enlist in the military and helping them explore the pride but also the fear that comes with this honor, is a special interest of mine. In addition, I also work with parents whose children are diagnosed with chronic illnesses.
With clients who are struggling with anxiety and depression, I utilize evidence-based theories such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. I help clients create distance from their unhelpful thoughts and empower them to make lasting changes, regardless of their anxiety and depression.
For people experiencing substance use issues, I provide a judgment-free zone to begin healing. Utilizing a variety of behavioral theories, I help guide my clients through the contemplation stage of change. We work through the guilt and shame they may experience and I provide continual encouragement to help aid my clients with their recovery and follow through.
In addition to working with substance users, I also work with their partners, family, and friends. Having a loved one who is struggling with substance issues is never easy. It’s quite the opposite and often anxiety-provoking, exhausting and very stressful. I help my clients determine if their loved one can change and if so, we develop a plan if treatment is needed. We work to understand the “why” behind their alcohol or drug use and I help my clients to support their loving relationships and not substance use. I also have completed basic training in Attachment-Focused Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. I use EMDR with people who have undergone traumatic events (big or small). Attachment-Focused EMDR focuses on creating safety through resourcing so you are prepared for EMDR and adapts to your needs.
My Background…
I grew up in Chicago’s South Suburbs. I received my Undergraduate degree in psychology from Governor’s State University. I received my Master’s degree from The Adler School of Professional Psychology. As a therapist, I have worked with a diverse population with needs from severe mental health issues to survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence, as well as people struggling with substance abuse and their loved ones. This experience has fortified my passion to work with individuals who desire to improve their lives with resilience and bravery, regardless of their pasts.
On a more personal note…
I enjoy cooking and appreciate how a meal can bring together family and friends. Even with our very busy lives, I always try to bring my family together to catch up over a delicious meal (whether I made it or not!). Further, I challenge myself regularly with personal goals and enjoy watching others set and achieve their own goals.
