Therapist Spotlight: Interviewing Teen Therapist Clara Gay 2.0

Therapist Spotlight: An Interview with Teen Therapist Clara Gay 2.0

DK Therapy has grown, and we would like to give you the opportunity to get to know a little more about our therapists, what challenges their clients face, and what it would be like to work with them.

At DK, we focus on your comfort within the therapy office. We hope that knowing a bit about your therapist before your first visit helps you make a connection even before meeting them.

“I always hope that my clients come away with a sense that they are strong enough to face whatever comes their way. Having this confidence is harder at points, during which I let my clients know I am their cheerleader until their self-trust is rebuilt.Without further ado…Let’s get to know more about teen therapist Clara Gay, LSW.

What do you hope clients gain when working with you?

Clara Gay: My hope for my clients is that they walk away each session feeling heard and have someone cheering them on.

I want to share skills with clients that they can use in between sessions that are tailored towards them in order to gain a sense of empowerment over their lives. Sometimes it is hard to navigate things alone, and I hope that clients feel that through therapy, they have another person in their corner, ready to help.

What is a therapy session like with you?

Clara Gay: In the first few sessions, we are just getting to know each other and gaining comfortability. It can be hard to open up to a new person, so I try to provide a space where you feel safe and accepted. We’ll work together to come up with your goals for therapy and work toward them.

Each session might look a little different, sometimes playing games, drawing, using music to express emotion, or talking things through. We’ll try lots of different approaches and see what feels right for you.

What self-care strategies do you use to manage life stressors?

Clara Gay: It took a lot of trial and error to figure out how to engage in self-care and what worked best for me. In high school, playing tennis for my school helped me manage my stress along with hanging out with friends I made through musicals.

As I grew up, my love of movement and engaging in connection stayed. Now my self-care looks like FaceTiming friends, being out in nature, or watching my favorite TV show. I also love to explore new places to expand my worldview and mindset!

In addition to her work with teens, Clara Gay also works with adults. Keep an eye out for an interview focused on her work with adult clients, coming soon on the blog.
