Beyond Therapy: Everyday Habits for Sustaining Mental Wellness in 2024

Beyond Therapy: Everyday Habits for Sustaining Mental Wellness in 2024

For many of us, there’s no doubt that therapy is an incredibly helpful tool when it comes to maintaining our mental well-being. However, it’s important to be able to cope with the challenges of everyday life when we’re outside of our therapist’s office. Fortunately, beyond the counseling couch, there is a wide array of simple yet powerful routines we can use to shape our mental wellness in 2024.

Let’s explore a few ways to boost our mental wellness this year.

Set Limits on Social Media

It’s great to keep in touch with what’s going on in the world, but too much of a good thing can become quite limiting. Exposing yourself to too much social media can weigh on your mental health, so in 2024, take steps to limit how much time you spend online. While you don’t need to step away from social media entirely, preserve your mental health by finding more meaningful things to do with your time. Avoid endless scrolling by turning off your notifications and keeping your phone in another room when you’re not busy.

Get Some Exercise

Physical activity is an excellent behavior to adopt if you want to enhance both your physical and mental well-being this year. You don’t have to dedicate hours of your day to intense workouts, though. Going for a short walk or practicing yoga sessions can be just as effective at improving your mood and balancing your serotonin levels. Pace yourself and take it slow. Gradually, you can develop a regular exercise routine that meets your needs and helps boost your sense of mental wellness.

Eat a Healthy Diet

The way we feel inside can have a lot to do with the foods we consume, so if you’d like to focus on your mental wellness this year, do what you can to eat a healthy diet. Make conscious decisions to eat lean proteins, natural sources of fiber, fruits, and vegetables. You don’t have to limit sweets and salty snacks entirely, but it’s a good idea to try replacing some of these servings with healthier alternatives. This way, you can make sure you’re getting the vitamins and nutrients your body needs to thrive.

Dedicate Time to Sleep

Sleep is one of the most neglected elements of self-care for adults in the US, especially among individuals who live with depression and other mental health conditions. Poor sleep quality can do a number on an individual’s mental health, so if you’d like to improve how you feel this year, get better sleep. By addressing your current sleep issues, you can work toward alleviating some of the mental health symptoms you’re struggling with. Do your best to get a solid 8 hours of sleep each night so that you can wake up feeling rested.

Go Easy on Yourself

Many of us put a lot of responsibility on ourselves and we’re often the first to beat ourselves up when we don’t live up to our own expectations. This year, do what you can to go easy on yourself. Remember that you’re a human being and you’re going to make mistakes every now and again. Instead of ruminating on a mistake you’ve made, do your best to learn from it. This way, you can make more mindful decisions in the future. Practice self-care and self-compassion for a healthier, happier year.

As we step into 2024, it’s important to employ a holistic approach to take care of ourselves mentally and emotionally. Take simple steps to weave healthy everyday habits into the fabric of your life. This way, you can foster a thriving mental state both during and beyond your therapy sessions.

If you’re struggling and you feel that therapy would benefit you in 2024, we welcome you to reach out to DK Therapy. Schedule an appointment with us and we’ll connect you with one of our caring and experienced therapists.
