I am a Licensed Social Worker, but I am also thought of as a warm and empathetic advocate. My clients experience me as nurturing, grounded, relatable, and professional which combined can create a safe space and therapeutic environment. I believe that therapy should be enjoyable, and I like to bring a sense of humor to sessions when appropriate, but when it comes to more serious issues, I pride myself on being an active non-judgmental listener and a compassionate ally.
My Background…
I grew up in St. Pete Beach, Florida, but as an adult have lived all over the country and have deep familial roots in the Chicagoland area. I received my undergraduate degree from University of New Mexico in English and Psychology. I received my Master’s degree in social work from Loyola University of Chicago. I also have a Master’s degree from Spertus College in organizational leadership. As a therapist, I have worked at college settings with students and many social service agencies in Chicago with unhoused individuals who have experienced severe and complex forms of trauma. This experience has strengthened my passion to work with individuals and couples to navigate life’s transitions and overcome deep-rooted negative belief systems.
How I Help…
No two people are alike and because of that I tailor my therapeutic approach to best address your needs with a goal to work in collaboration with you to identify the best approach for your needs. I utilize skills founded in evidence-based therapies including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Gottman Method for work with couples. I’m also a Yoga and Meditation Teacher and like to use various techniques from these traditions to help alleviate depression and anxiety and to foster greater mind/body awareness.
I believe that a strong therapeutic alliance allows clients to process uncomfortable feelings, confront unhealthy habits, and recognize their talents and possibilities for contribution. I aim to impart and encourage a sense of belonging, empowerment, and independence through listening, advocating, and assisting clients to shape their lives as they see best.
I work with adults and couples who have experienced personal or generational trauma, undergone major life transitions, sexuality and gender struggles, have experienced setbacks/losses, relationship concerns, and who have felt depression, anxiety, worry, stress, loneliness, family issues, and problematic coping.
In addition, to working with adults individually, I also work with couples and I completed level two training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy. I work with couples in every stage of their relationship, whether they are dating, seeking pre-marital or marital counseling. I also work with couples in non-traditional relationships. Developed from John Gottman’s 40+ years of couples research, The Gottman Method provides couples with a roadmap and a set of skills that not only can help them build stronger relationships, but can also help them be a better parent, co-worker, boss, and friend.
On a more personal note…
When I’m not engaging in therapeutic work, I enjoy spending time getting involved in a project, like remodeling residential properties or refurbishing various components of old houses, or playing music on the organ, harpsichord, or banjo. I also love all forms of exercise including yoga, cycling, and high-intensity interval training. I’m also a classically trained pastry chef and known for my love of fine cuisine and love trying out a new restaurant or cooking and baking with my spouse.
