Therapist Spotlight: An Interview with Joslyn

DK Therapy has grown in the past six months and we would like to  give you the opportunity to get to know a little more about our therapists, what challenges their clients face, and what it would be like to work with them.

At DK, we focus on your comfort within the therapy office. We hope that knowing a bit about your therapist before your first visit, helps you make a connection even before meeting them.

Without further ado interview with Joslyn 2.0…

What are some of the challenges your clients face?

Joslyn:

Many clients I see often feel stuck or overwhelmed, especially when they first seek therapy.  Often my clients are facing issues with their relationships, whether it be connecting with their partner, struggling to compromise on a big decision that affects their relationship, or at times ‘feeling more like roommates or friends’ and not romantic partners. Many of my clients struggle with work/life balance and leaving work at work. They often need help navigating life transitions such as job changes or moving to the city and not having social supports. My college-aged clients often need support in navigating the social scene of college and figuring out how to balance classes and other responsibilities.

Why do you think it is important for people to participate in therapy?

Joslyn:

Most people are faced with challenges at some point in their lives and therapy can help people navigate through those challenges. Often people come to therapy after they have turned to others and either have not gotten the help they had hoped for or maybe they were met with an unfavorable response. Coming to therapy provides people with a safe space and the opportunity to seek help from someone completely out of their ‘social circle’ with a fresh perspective. Coming to therapy can help you build skills, gain insight and to increase your own self-awareness so they are more equipped to face life challenges.

What are some self-care activities you use to manage life stressors?

Joslyn:

Me in a typical ‘London’ style photo.

For me, self-care can take many forms, depending on my mood and often the weather/season in Chicago. n the warmer months, I love to be active outside, playing beach volleyball and taking walks throughout the city and by the lake. I enjoy traveling whenever possible and find it to be a great way to escape the day-to-day grind and learn about different places and cultures. I also enjoy quieter activities for self-care such as reading for my book club or cuddling up with my rescue dog, Toby.

We hope you enjoyed learning more about Joslyn. Stay tuned for more of her blogs.
